Benefits to Maintenance
June is almost done, which is completely bonkers to me. With summer in full swing here, many of you have reached out with service call requests and replacement questions. Some common answers I’ve been given when asked “how long since your system was serviced” are:
“Never” “I don’t know” “Years” Which would have been my answer too before I started here! I didn’t know the importance of maintaining my HVAC systems until I was exposed to the information. The best way to describe why you should service your HVAC units is the same reason you should go for regular car service- it helps prevent major problems.
Every system has its own guidelines and recommended maintenance, much like a car does. Below is a suggestion for your service schedule.
· Filter cleaning/change- this depends on your system, of course, but most filters need to be cleaned or changed every 90 days. Benefit: your HVAC unit won’t have to work as hard to push the air through, prolonging the life of your system and ensuring the quality of air you have in your home is as fresh as it can be.
· HVAC Inspection- this is definitely recommended at least once a year, especially if it is a system you only turn on once a season (air conditioning unit is a great example of this). Benefit: Making sure that only the normal wear and tear has happened in the last year is the best way to stay on top of any problems; no one wants an A/C unit that won’t work during a heat wave!
· HVAC Cleaning- Having your system cleaned by a professional is one of the best ways to keep the system running smoothly. Every unit is different in terms of cleaning schedule- something to keep in mind would be how many people/pets are in your home. The more there are, the dirtier your system can potentially become. Benefit: having a technician do it ensures that your system is cleaned thoroughly and properly, extending the life of the unit and cutting down on replacement costs.
· Duct Cleaning- Having your duct work cleaned once a year if you have a big family or a lot of furry family members is highly recommended. This ensures no debris builds up in your pipes that provide you fresh air. Benefit: Keeping your ducts cleaned helps prevent mold, mildew and other bacteria from building up and circulating in your home.
Something to consider is having a cleaning done if you’ve just moved into your new home. Not sure when it was cleaned last? We can send one of our techs out to investigate and let you know!
